BigFix Enters ITAM Market

Bigfix are known for security, patching and systems management.

Yesterday they formally announced their entry into the ITAM Market with their product tongue-twister Decision Support System – Software Asset Management“.

The news release from BigFix says they are using their foundation and pedigree in file and application inventory and matching it to a 15,000 strong application library. The sweetly named BigFix DSS SAM product also includes a contracts module, analytics, and web based reporting.

They also mention “software metering” (stopping the use of software based on policies or thresholds) but perhaps they mean software usage? (monitoring what people are using so you can make well informed licensing decisions).

Terminology aside, BigFix have quite a hill to climb. The product does not look particularly innovative at face value, they are a late entrant into the market and the press release hints at enterprise level pricing. We look forward to hearing more and road testing Bigfix DSS SAM in the future.
