Software Recognition Lab Test
This article introduces a new type of review for The ITAM Review in 2015; Lab Tests.
Our first lab test will focus on Software Recognition. Our study will be a data driven comparison of the software recognition capabilities of leading SAM tools.
A fundamental building block for any enterprise class SAM tool is its software recognition capabilities. For large organizations the challenge of accurately identifying the installed applications and understanding how they should be licensed is incredibly difficult. Our objective is to independently validate the software recognition strength of leading SAM tools and highlight the business value of software recognition.
The lab test will attempt to verify the marketing claims of the tool vendors and thoroughly test the capabilities of each tool in a lab environment. The review will compare, contrast and ultimately rank SAM tools based on their software recognition strength. As well as comparing tools against each other, we will also benchmark tools against the inventory data, therefore demonstrating the business value of software recognition.
Real Life Data
This review compares the software recognition capabilities of leading SAM tools against real life customer data. SAM tools will be scored based on comparitive recognition i.e. How well they did against each other using the same data sets. Our software recognition lab test will be based on real life customer data from five (5) end user organizations of various sizes using various inventory sources (e.g. Altiris, SCCM, LANDesk etc).
