Grow ITAM maturity – and your profile – with ISO 19770-1

In this video Rory Canavan explores some of the benefits of the new version of ISO 19770-1 ahead of his session at our US Conference.

I think it’s safe to say that many ITAM managers may think that they’re too busy to implement an ISO-compliant programme, have the perception that it’s just a load of additional bureaucracy getting in the way of delivery, or maybe a case of using a sledgehammer to crack a nut. This certainly matched my experience when I was a day-to-day IT Asset Manager.

 A fresh perspective

However, having heard Rory speak on a number of occasions, he has changed my view on this, not least because the ISO standard has evolvedIt’s no longer a monolithic, top-down, proscriptive standard. His assertion that ISO 19770-1 has the potential to leverage maturity from other domains such as Service Management & IT Security is a glimpse of Next Generation ITAM. Other sessions at the conference will explore how to work with new stakeholders. Our reader survey indicates that ITAM roles are growing in seniority, and with that growth in seniority comes the need for ITAM Operational maturity. You may be able to manage a site with 5000 assets reasonably well, but could your processes scale to a much larger site?

Use Cases

Rory also points out that implementing ISO 19770-1 provides a framework for ITAM to work with other management domains and match deliverables more closely with business deliverables.

For example, rather than thinking about the specifics of generating an ELP for Microsoft you may instead be able to forecast demand and enable strategic procurement decisions. Or to accurately report on the value a particular software asset investment is providing, by understanding which products rely on that software. In previous roles I often found it a battle to get senior stakeholders to look at software investments at the strategic level, primarily because product delivery was siloed into individual projects with individual budgets. The new approaches outlined in Rory’s session have the potential to solve these sorts of challenges.

Come and see Rory speak at our US Conference, on March 13th & 14th 2019 at the University of South Florida, St. Petersburg (USFSP)
