Manatee County first purchased and implemented OpenLM in 2010. At the time we were struggling with the management of our concurrent license pool for our ESRI ArcGIS Desktop products. OpenLM not only lived up to its’ expectations as far as managing the license pool it also filled a void in reporting on license usage. Prior to OpenLM we were basically flying blind, and the only way we knew we had licensing issues was when our users started getting denial of licenses and even then we couldn’t see what was really going on. OpenLM allowed us to be more pro-active in monitoring license usage, we could see when perhaps a user had toggled on ArcINFO when perhaps they only needed ArcView. Additionally when we did have licensing issues OpenLM provided the back up data to support justifications to purchase more licensing, now I had charts and graphs to support our case for expanding the pool. OpenLM has also helped us achieve a higher level of usage efficiencies out of the licenses we do have through its ability to save and close sessions that have become inactive. We are currently and comfortably supporting an ESRI versioned editing environment of 33 active editors with a pool of 26 ArcINFO licenses. As far as bang for the buck, OpenLM is the best 3rd party product we’ve implemented to support our ESRI ArcGIS Desktop environment.

We have been using OpenLM now for a couple of years and have found it to be very easy to install, maintain and administer. It has enabled us to aggregate and track usage for the dozens of network licenses hosted on multiple servers onto one very thoughtfully designed, at-a-glance web interface. OpenLM is also the best product we have found for really drilling down to usage of individual features within a product such as MATLAB toolboxes, which other products that only track program executables are unable to do. Above all, the OpenLM team have always been conscientious and ready to accommodate and support our software asset management requirements, therefore I wholly recommend this product.

With an ever increasing user base spread across multiple office locations, the administration of ArcGIS Desktop licences is a challenging task. Prior to the adoption of OpenLM there would be the inevitable round of daily emails asking whether a licence could be released due to lack of availability. From an administration perspective, it was difficult to establish how effectively licences were being utilised and plan for future growth as we had limited reporting capability. Work day morning. IT department received a complaint about Matlab licenses not being available and was asked to explain what happened. Openlm proved to be a precious tool! With few clicks we were able to create a report on what happened and illustrate it with graphics. Even more, if the users wanted to see who was using matlab, and what features were active, it provided an online web tool that could be queried on demand, by the inquiry user, enabling them to get data by the minute.scavenging flexlm logs, building reports by hand and filtering the data so it would make sense. The work stress was lifted from our shoulders and the users got the information they were looking for, and more. Since We started using OpenLM We now have access to numbers, statistics and reliable information to make decisions, analyze problems and conflicts with licenses on campus. The software is intuitive and works beautifully. Installation and upgrades are a breeze. With a simple Web Browser We can monitor license activity and take action when problems occur. We bought OpenLM to monitor the use of our Autodesk and Esri Arcgis floating licenses. Since installing OpenLM we now know exactly who, when, how long and what everybody is using. We soon discovered the discrepancy between the presumed and effective use of the software. Now we know for sure we don’t need to buy more licenses thus saving us a lot of money. From this moment on we also can take educated decisions on organizational changes concerning the use of the software. Why had we not purchased OpenLM sooner?

As a GIS manager in a public administration I was again and again confronted with the same questions from groups with very different interests. The GIS-users asked for more GIS-licenses, the financial accounting urged me to save money in the GIS-business. With the installation of OpenLM software these questions are history. We use our licenses much more effective and were confirmed in our guess, that some users opened GIS-software when they started working and keep the license the whole day, just to have it ready if they need. Now licenses are freed up after 20 minutes when a license usage of 80% is reached and everything works fine. The financial accounting I can apply with statistics from OpenLM about the usage of licenses to show the importance of GIS-software. OpenLM is exactly the software we were looking for. Trimble Navigation Ltd. Is a Silicon Valley based technology company with a wide product range whose core technology leverages the many applications for Global Positioning Systems (GPS). Customer solutions range from controlling earthmoving equipment and precision agriculture to fleet management and surveying. Trimble’s engineering staff includes roughly 95 CAD system users whose CAD tools are licensed through a FlexLM floating license manager. It has been a long term struggle to properly allocate the costs associated with the CAD system tools such as new licenses and maintenance fees for existing seats to the proper departments. Initially, OpenLM was investigated as a tool to track license usage so that the costs can be allocated to the specific groups within Trimble based on actual usage of the licenses provided. With more than 800 seats of potential users for ArcGIS, we were really worried about the amount of licenses we will need to buy to cover our needs. People argue that they cannot finish their work when there’s not enough license available, so we received a lot of pressure to buy more licenses. We suspected that in most cases, licenses were captive but not being used. Until we bought OpenLM we couldn’t be sure that we were right. Now we have delayed our purchases of licenses until we get real data for the need of buying them. At the beginning, people get a bit annoyed when they loose their licenses, but they see the benefit of it pretty soon.
