Micro Focus Academic Licensing

There are three agreements available for Academic institutions:

• VLA for Education
• Academic License Agreement (ALA)
• School License Agreement (SLA)

VLA for Education

For this agreement, the rules are very similar to those for the commercial VLA which can be found here.

Academic License Agreement (ALA)

This agreement is aimed at colleges and universities with license quantities based on the number of FTE (Full Time Equivalent) staff or the number of workstations/mobile devices. However, the FTE option can only be used where you have more FTEs than workstations.

There is a $5,000 minimum purchase requirement.

In North America, it can be purchased via a reseller or direct with Micro Focus. For EMEA and APAC, it is via the reseller channel only.

The ALA offers a range of “value bundles” which combine certain products such as:

Value Bundle 1 = Open Enterprise Server, ZENworks Configuration Management, Identity Manager Standard Edition, and GroupWise

Value Bundle 2 = Open Enterprise Server, ZENworks Configuration Management, ZENworks Patch Management, ZENworks Linux Management, Identity Manager Standard Edition, and GroupWise

What is required?

The initial agreement lasts for 3 years and can then be renewed for 1 year at a time. The “Annual Fee Worksheet” – which specifies the products to be used that year – must be completed annually. All licenses via the ALA are subscriptions; if perpetual licenses are required, they can be purchased via the VLA for Education program.

FTE calculation

The total FTE count required is the sum of:

Faculty & Staff FTEs

For the prior academic year, the number of full-time faculty and staff plus the total number of hours worked by part-time faculty and staff in an average workweek divided by 40.

Student FTEs

For the prior academic year, the number of full-time students plus the total number of part-time student credit hours divided by the number of credit hours you use to identify full-time status.

Micro Focus say:

“The FTE calculation for each category of faculty, staff, and students must be demonstrated through a verifiable means that may include use of an audited annual report, an organization’s human resource system, or the government website, government report, or other published report provided by Customer that shows accurate information”

School License Agreement (SLA)

This program is aimed at primary education establishments aka K-12 in North America. There is a $1,000 annual minimum purchase and organisations can choose between counting Student Enrolments, workstations, or mobile devices. You can select from pre-determined product bundles or create your own bundle – with, according to the SLA Annual Fee Worksheet, a minimum value* of $2.90 per student enrolment or $42.00 per workstation.

*Micro Focus web pages differ – some say $2.25 per student enrolment or $34.00 per workstation, while others say $2.50 per student enrolment or $38.00 per workstation.

Qualifying for academic programs

Schools, Universities, and Administrations

These include:

• Schools & universities accredited/recognized/approved by their local/state/federal/provincial government
• Supervisory organizations of qualified schools or other educational institutions
• State departments of education
• Boards of education
• School district administrative offices
• Local education authorities
• Preschools, day schools, or after school activity centres accredited/recognized/approved by their government

Educational Public Facilities

• Non-Profit museums
• Libraries

Educational Hospitals

To qualify, such an establishment must meet all the following criteria:

• Non-profit teaching hospitals
• Have its primary affiliation be with an accredited degree-granting college or university that would be eligible for participation in the ALA
• Have a formally documented teaching affiliation with either a nationally accredited medical school for a clerkship, internship, or residency program for medical students or a nationally-accredited nursing school that grants the RN or LPN/LVN degree
