Software Pirate Caught Selling On Auction Site

The Business Software Alliance (BSA) has named the latest software pirate to be caught for selling illegal software. John Rothwell from Liverpool in the UK fell afoul of the BSA investigators when he tried to sell them £2,000 of Adobe, CorelDRAW, Microsoft Office and other software titles for £29.

Mr Rothwell was selling items via www.Ioffer.com. A quick browse under “software” on the Ioffer site makes for interesting reading. One seller (see screenshot below) is offering hundreds of titles for the Apple platform for $149.99.

Buyers put themselves at considerable risk of

  • a) getting riddled with viruses
  • b) getting exposed to fines and legal proceedings like Mr Rothwell
  • c) Using unsupported and illegal software
  • d) potentially having to pay for the software again if caught and
  • e) finally – having their identity stolen during the purchase process.
