BBC Slashes SAP Licensing Costs
The BBC has reportedly reduced it’s software spend by using software usage data on SAP licensing.
Silicon reports that there were 2,126 staff members with licenses to use their SAP ERP system who had not logged in during a 3 month period, highlighting a potential £300K ($450K) saving per annum.
The British Broadcasting Corporation plans to analyse software usage across other applications following the findings.
Ingredients Required To Repeat This Saving Exercise In Your Business?
- A degree of confidence that you have collected an accurate audit of your entire IT estate
- Software usage information for the target application
- The corresponding license information
- Perhaps most importantly – the correct license scheme to allow savings. The BBC made savings on annual spend – perhaps maintenance on the SAP licenses or a subscription license.

First place to look for savings is by locking the users who have not logging into the system for X number of days. This should be run regularly. The Second step is to classify users based on license type. Step 3 is prevent users from multiple logons.
