Australian Engineering Firm Must Pay 10 Years Compensation For Copyright Infringement

Autodesk Australia has successfully sued Ginos Engineers Pty Ltd, an engineering firm based in Adelaide, for copyright infringement of its CAD software.

The representative from Autodesk said legal action was the last resort based on investigations with the company starting back in 2007. Ginos will have to pay compensatory damages for use of Autodesk software over ten years, court costs plus an additional $76,000 damages for the ‘flagrant’ nature of the infringement (i.e. They could not claim ignorance).

10 years compensatory damages usually means the unit price for all software applications in use over that period, at full undiscounted retail price, plus full maintenance, plus any extras. Whilst the statement from Autodesk did not go into specfics I expect the bill to be crippling.
