Raising the profile of ITAM identified as the top benefit of ISO/IEC 19770-1 certification: ITAM Forum survey

The buzz around ISO 19770-1 certification continues to ramp up. Last month The ITAM Forum opened its doors to organizations wishing to certify themselves against the ITAM standard, ISO/IEC 19770-1, for the first time. Read more here

Coinciding with this, the ITAM Forum has polled its members to identify the business impacts that organisations expect to gain from being certified against 19770-1. The survey focused on the relevance of certification; Why are organizations interested in being certified? What business impact will it deliver for their ITAM practice? What impact will it deliver for their business?

Interestingly, raising the profile of the ITAM practice with internal stakeholders, external stakeholders and generally elevating the profile of ITAM were the strongest business benefits of an organizational certification.

This rings true when we look up the long-term trends impacting the IT Asset Management market.

I’ve been referring to these super trends for several years. Some of you might have heard me mention before that IT is no longer the department in the corner fixing laptops, and ITAM is no longer an administrative function counting computers. Modern IT has evolved into a thread running through the fabric of the whole company and similarly modern IT Asset Managers are reporting to and advising the C-Suite.

With this board level visibility comes board level scrutiny.

ITAM increasingly holds an advisory position to the board. So, it stands to reason that IT Asset Managers are keen to embrace the new certification scheme in order to validate to their internal stakeholders that they’re doing a good job to prove independently and unequivocally that they have a professional practice. Especially to those senior managers or board level stakeholders that may have no understanding whatsoever of the complexity of IT Asset Management.

By achieving the certification IT Asset Management departments around the world will be able to validate the quality of their ITAM practice, demonstrate at board level the quality of the service they’re delivering, and elevate the profile of their team.

We will continue to monitor and report on the ITAM Forum’s progress as they work to develop the world’s first ISO/IEC 19770-1 certification.
