The ISO/IEC 19770 SAM Standard Needs Your Input (Action Required)

Your Help Is Required

The SAM standard ISO/IEC 19770 is pivotal to the ongoing development of the SAM industry.

The standard enables the industry to benefit from a commercially neutral benchmark and frame of reference on which to build SAM training, services, skills and implementations.

However, rather than a lofty best practice ideal the standard needs to be pragmatic and usable.

In a bold and innovative move the working group driving the development of the standard have developed a revision so that the standard effectively meets market requirements.

The aim of the revision is to break the standard into four tiers to facilitate the adoption of standardized SAM. The tiers are linked directly to the processes described in the 2006 standard, providing greater accessibility to the standard as well as newly incorporated guidance in the Annexes.

Dave Phillips, Editor of the revision comments

“The update offers tiers that closely align with the processes in the successful existing 19770-1:2006 standard. Preliminary trials confirmed that four tiers like this offer organizations the choice they wanted. For instance, Tier 1 attainment includes the processes supporting repeatable licensing compliance processes. Organizations can now demonstrate conformance by assessing their licensing compliance processes against Tier 1 of the 19770-1 revision.”

This revision is now available for public review and your opinion counts.

  1. ITAM Review describes this as a bold and innovative move.

    Can we hear from us

practitioners (especially non-ISO?) add to this blog: My question is “What’s it mean for real-world practitioners?”

    Yes, some

very diverse use is emerging of this tiered approach: from end-user focused orgs like IAITAM to vendor-industry training offerings like

SAM Advantage. But, how do we practitioners view this?

1 – making a difference, if this simpler SAM framework extends its roll-

    out?

2 – The new ISO revisions for SAM effectively contain the first ever industry SAM standard which a majority of orgs can now

achieve and certify. Will this result in growth in professionalism for us practitioners?

    …And, with regard to value-add:

3 – Tier 1 of the proposed newly tiered standard – with its certifiable “repeatable licensing compliance process” – touches a basic

business necessity of almost every business and board-room… What’s the implication for managing in-house(or indeed selling)

    professional SAM services?

Can we see some more opinions on these 3 questions please Martin?

    Dave Phillips. P.S. Sticking

my neck out here as a practitioner (first and foremost!) I’m also designated ISO project editor).

  3. Rory Canavan says:

I wonder which came first – the revisions to the SAM Standard, or the

BSA’s SAM Advantage?! Still, a sense of unification in the SAM arena will be no bad thing.

  4. Darius says:

Is there any indication on when the decisions about the revision of SAM ISO will be published and if applicable the new ISO

Standard will become effective and available?

    Thanks

    Darius

  5. I believe the new revised standard

will be available this year / start of next.
